Msunduzi River

South Africa's burgeoning center

The Msunduzi River, also known as the Dusi River, is a tributary of the Mngeni River. Msunduzi is Zulu, a language spoken by 24% of the South African people. The river passes through the main city of the Msunduzi municipality, Pietermaritzburg. One of the biggest attractions to the river is the Dusi Canoe Marathon. The marathon attracts over 2,000 rowers and is a national news media story in South Africa.

One of the major problems with the river is the high presence of E. Coli bacteria. the Duzi-Umgeni Conservation Trust was set-up to support cleanliness in the river. It pushed for the Msunduzi government's approval of a 10 million rand improvement to the sewage system to help prevent unnecessary amounts of sewage from entering the river. the organization also supports the cleanliness of the Mngeni River.
